Week 28 Common Ancestry and Diversity

March 16 2015
QFD : You gotta try your luck at least once a day, because you could be going around lucky all day and not even know it.
James Dean
Essential Question of the Day : what is evolution? What’s the evidence that exists that scientists base their claims on?
This Weeks Learning Objective : LS4.A: Evidence of Common Ancestry and Diversity
Genetic information provides evidence of evolution. DNA sequences vary among species, but there are many overlaps; in fact, the ongoing branching that produces multiple lines of descent can be inferred by comparing the DNA sequences of different organisms. Such information is also derivable from the similarities and differences in amino acid sequences and from anatomicaland embryological evidence.

Today’s performance objective : Students will write Cornell notes on the topic of common ancestry and evolution evidence
1) ppt evidence
Evidence for Evolution
Darwin Theories Living species are related by common ancestry
……………………………………………………………..Change occurs over long period of time
……………………………………………………………..Adaptive evolution is natural selection and is responsible for ………………………………………………………………driving evolution
Tree of Life ………………………………………….. Evidence and distribution of certain organisms and species that ………………………………………………………………are related due to similar DNA Sequences
Evidence of Common Ancestry Fossil record history of life on earth over 4.6 billion years ………………………………………………………………composed of derived traits ( newly evolved traits ie feathers) ………………………………………………………………and Ancestral traits ( primitive features such as hair and nails
………………………………………………………………Comparative Anatomy – similar structures inherited from a ………………………………………………………………common ancestor also known as Homologous structures ( ………………………………………………………………human arm, bat wing, whales flipper, horse leg)
……………………………………………………………..Vestigial Structures—structures that are in a reduced form that ……………………………………………………………..no longer have a function ( ie appendix in humans)
……………………………………………………………Comparative Embryology – evolutionary relationships between …………………………………………………………….various species are very similar suggesting a common ancestor
……………………………………………………………..Geographic Distribution – distribution of both plants and ………………………………………………………………animals around earth suggests common ancestry and patterns ………………………………………………………………of migration linked to climate and geological forces
………………………………………………………………Adaptation – Camouflage allows species to blend into their ……………………………………………………………….environment to avoid predators
………………………………………………………………..Mimicry – allows a species to resemble another species ( ………………………………………………………………..coral and king snake)

QFD : Every St. Patrick’s Day every Irishman goes out to find another Irishman to make a speech to
Essential Question of the Day : name and describe 3 reasons that support the theory of common ancestry

Today’s performance objective : students will be assigned one form of evidence and create and page on their weebly site to support their claim
1) weebly assignment evolution Webquest
This WebQuest was designed to help you locate evidence for evolution from different areas of science. New evidence for evolution is being discovered every day. No evidence has been found which cannot be explained by evolution. If the future continues as in the past, we can look forward to more information about the genomes of earth’s creatures, new discoveries in the fossil record, and the finding of new species in places like the ocean depths and the tropical rainforests. One thing is certain, more evidence will be added to support the theory of evolution.
1. I will assign you topic to research. And you will add another page to your weebly to display your information title “ Evolution Evidence”
2. Each student will become a specialists in (1)anatomy and physiology, or (2) paleontology, or (3)molecular biology. Anatomists study the structure of organisms, physiologists study the function of organisms, molecular biologists study genetics, and paleontologists study fossils.
3.Review the sites that apply to your specialty and add 3 pictures to your weebly that reveals the evidence found.
4. Find four to five examples of evidence for evolution. Try to find specific examples, so that when you present to the class you will all have different examples to share. Also, try to find the date on which the evidence was discovered. Write 1-2 paragraphs explaining this evidence and place them under the pictures on your website

QFD : That awkward moment when it’s Spring Break and you’re sitting at home on Twitter
Essential Question of the Day : why do scientist view the fossil record as evidence for evolution?

QFD : Our hearts were drunk with a beauty Our eyes could never see. George William Russell
Essential Question of the Day : what ar some of the alternate views to evolution ? Hiw are they supported by scientists

Today’s performance objective : understand the history of life on earth by writing a perfect paragraph
1) film clips

honors students must have the topic and outline with at least 3 sources they are going to be using by the time we come back .. As in that Monday … This is a 100 points and is a zero if not completed by that date…

  1. Can you check my website?

    • It was so good I put a link to it on website so others would understand the expectations .. Thank you for meeting and exceeding them 🙂

    • But you could change the word dominate to dominant

  2. borden today i felt like sh!! and was wondering if i could please retake the quiz tomorrow which is what i came in 6th for but u kicked me out. thanks if yeahh

  3. Hey borden what did you say we had to work on during break? You said something about our research projects and an outline?

    • Yes I did say all honors students must have the topic and outline with at least 3 sources they are going to be using by the time we come back .. As in that Monday … This is a 100 points and is a zero if not completed by that date…

  4. Hey yo Mr.B wassup fam , I hope your spring break has been going good <33 I was wondering if you can explain the homework that is due on Monday Plzzz (-:

  5. It’s on the bottom of the web page from the last day of class

    • Alright thanks Mr.B (-:

  6. Hey Mr Borden! So I keep changing my mind about the topic I want to use for my research paper and I think I want to go with testing beauty products on animals. Do you think that’s okay?

    • Good idea … How about the science that exists between a dog and people who r dying … Or medicinal values of owning and caring for a pet or … U decide

  7. There’s not enough reliable sources for that kind of topic. Maybe I’ll just do it on Alzheimer’s.

    • That sounds great … And there should be a lot to look at concerning that topic .. We also need to focus the topic around subjects that we have touched on during this year if possible , ie.. Alzheimer’s and modern gene therapy treatments … Or causes and cures …. Something that you can make a determination of how to cure the problem.. You don’t have to be right in your conclusion…

  8. I need help choosing a different topic!!! my first topic was geographic isolation of mammals of Tahiti, there’s not enough reliable sources for that kind of topic like maria said!!!! I don’t really understand this project at all either 😦 can you please explain it to me more.

please don’t make my comment public either!!

    • I can delete this later but your topic is very good … Could we look the affects of geographic isolation of various species of animals , and use Tahiti as an example or resource and maybe compare the wildlife to the galapogos islands species … Maybe turtles or iguanas or Dolphins or ???
